The Trump presidency may have supercharged women to get involved with activism, but there’s a long history of women who’ve been unafraid to speak up for what they believe is right and a new Netflix documentary wants to highlight one of these outspoken women.
Martha Mitchell was a Republican cabinet wife in the Nixon administration. She was always outspoken, but the Republican Party was quick to turn on her once she started speaking against Nixon himself. The Martha Mitchell Effect recounts her story through archival footage and offers a female gaze on Watergate through the voice of the woman herself.
Directed and edited by Anne Alvergue and co-directed by Debra McClutchy, the new documentary is now streaming on Netflix.
