All is Not Right in “The Zone of Interest” Trailer

Many film trailers these days are guilty of putting the best jokes and most of the plot in the trailer, leaving little to the imagination. However, the new trailer for A24’s The Zone of Interest gives us such few details that they seem more concerned with conveying tone and vibe than plot.

From writer/director Jonathan Glazer, The Zone of Interest was the 2023 Grand Prix and Fipresci Prize winner at Cannes Film Festival. In it, the commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Hoss, and his wife Hedwig, strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp. As evidenced by the trailer’s abrupt cuts and unsettling music, this dream life at Auschwitz won’t pan out for the commandant. The trailer’s brief visuals show us what seem to be a normal family, enjoying the sunshine and eating meals together. Knowing it’s all set in a concentration camp lends the scenes a menace that’s hard to shake.

Starring Christian Friedel and Sandra Huller, The Zone of Interest looks devastating and intimidating in all the right ways. See the trailer below and watch it in select theaters beginning December 15.
