Not to use too obvious a metaphor, but A24's decision to go wide on Christmas Day with Uncut Gems was a big gamble that's paid off. The Safdie Brothers' wild dark comedy starring Adam Sandler has been a big hit (relative to its size), out-grossing several of Sandler's more typical comedies and even the big-budget musical disaster that is Cats.
Now that it's in most theaters, there's a new trailer, featuring Billy Joel's "The Stranger," which is used so effectively in the film. It paints perhaps a sunnier picture of what's in store than the original trailer, which was the best of 2019.
It's possible there's an Oscar nomination or two in store for the film when they're announced next week, but I wouldn't bet on it.
Uncut Gems is now playing in wide release.
