If there is one thing I have learned over the years, it is that I can fully trust Fox Searchlight.  Granted the independent studio has churned out a few not-so-good films, but the majority of their releases have been fantastic.  When I heard that the studio had already purchased Tom McCarthy's Win Win prior to its premiere at the 2011 Sundance FIlm Festival, I immediately knew that this movie was one to watch.  Having now seen the film, my feelings haven't changed.

Featuring an all-star cast led by Paul Giamatti and Amy Ryan, the film takes us on a wild adventure that will test the bonds of love, the power of commitment and the definition of family.

Both Giamatti and Ryan give breathtaking performances, but the true gem lies within the work of Jeffrey Tambor.  His ability to seem both innocent and in control makes for a complex and unpredictable character, adding an additional layer to the already mesmerizing piece.

I will admit that the film hits a bit of a pothole near the middle as it attempts to showcase its climax and resonate its major conflict.  The stint lasts about ten minutes, after which we get a truly heroic tale that will have an lasting effect on one and all.

The mixture of drama, comedy and adolescent behavior provides for a truly unique experience.  Shying away from the cliche, McCarthy is able to showcase an old-fashioned story in a brand new light.  And when you find a way to incorporate wrestling into the mix, that's just icing on the cake!

I owe this hobby/career to the one and only Stephanie Peterman who, while interning at Fox, told me that I had too many opinions and irrelevant information to keep it all bottled up inside. I survived my first rated R film, Alive, at the ripe age of 8, it took me months to grasp the fact that Julia Roberts actually died at the end of Steel Magnolias, and I might be the only person alive who actually enjoyed Sorority Row…for its comedic value of course. While my friends can drink you under the table, I can outwatch you when it comes iconic, yet horrid 80s films like Adventures in Babysitting and Troop Beverly Hills. I have no shame when it comes to what I like, and if you have a problem with that, then we’ll settle it on the racquetball court. I see too many movies to actually win any film trivia contest, so don’t waste your first pick on me. My friends rent movies from my bookcase shelves, and one day I do plan to start charging. I long to live in LA, where my movie obsession will actually help me fit in, but for now I am content with my home in Austin. I prefer indies to blockbusters, Longhorns to Sooners and Halloween to Friday the 13th. I miss the classics, as well as John Ritter, and I hope to one day sit down and interview the amazing Kate Winslet.
