Fantastic Fest Review: Two Rabbits

Score:B+

Running Time:110 Minutes

Rated:NR

Sometimes when you rely too much on a hyperkinetic visual
style full of flashy text, quick cuts, and nutty animation, your story gets
lost in the process"”whether it's actually good or not.  Early on, Two Rabbits threatens to fall into this trap with an overreliance
on everything mentioned above.  If
you give it a chance, the film calms a bit, settling into a complicated but
touching revenge story featuring some intense action and moving performances.
Also a plus, you'll get to hear the song from the Rise of the Guardians trailer a record amount of times.

Edgar is a technology genius, able to make virtually
anything out of electronic components; he just can't keep a regular job long
enough to move his life forward. When he gets involved in an unfortunate
accident, he leaves Brazil and hatches a complicated revenge plot to right a
wrong. Two years later, Edgar is back with a vengeance. Two Rabbits will not be for everyone.  The film takes a good hour to get into the interesting meat
of the story, and unfortunately by that time, if you can't deal with the visuals
you'll likely check out.

The hyperkinetic and highly stylized visuals are at times
overbearing but often are really well done.  The action is frantic, but you can always follow what's
happening.  Once the meaning behind
the revenge plot is revealed, the final shot is simultaneously heartbreaking
and hopeful, making it worth fighting through the insanity happening on screen
for the first hour.  Two Rabbits is a well-crafted and
impressively made action movie that will thrill you every step of way.
