SXSW Review: Turkey Bowl

Score:A-

Director:Kyle Smith

Cast:Morgan Beck, Adam Benic, Kerry Bishé, Troy Buchanan, Tom DiMenna

Running Time:64 Minutes

Rated:NR

The best thing about Turkey
Bowl was it was short and sweet. There wasn't any filler or junk. Turkey Bowl kept it real.

A group of friends meets once every year to play a game of
football. Called the Turkey Bowl, the winner receives a turkey at the end of
the game. But as the teams collide it's obvious that this game means more to
each person than just some frozen turkey.

You'd expect that with such a large cast that perhaps not every
character would matter. Amazingly, I felt like I got to know each person
individually throughout the course of the game. Furthermore, without making it
completely obvious or going over the top with information, the film does a
great job at inserting necessary background details. And the chemistry is
perfect. You never second-guess the plausibility of their friendships.

The film was shot in one location, a grassy open field in a park.
It's awesome that after 64 minutes you're still not bored with the spot. Turkey Bowl kept it interesting by using
a variety of shots and using them appropriately.

What made Turkey Bowl
great was the realistic dialogue. I have no idea whether some of it was improv,
but I still can't believe how natural it all sounded. Characters were funny
without even trying, which is why you become fond of the group and the game
they are playing. Being able to connect to the game is perhaps one of the best
things this film did.

Like any group of friends, if you're not having a good time, you
leave. Turkey Bowl succeeded in
bringing a group of people together and making it seem like they were inviting
the audience to enjoy the game, too.
