SXSW Review: The Cabin in the Woods

Score:B+

Director:Drew Goddard

Cast:Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford

Running Time:95.00

Rated:R

Telling the story of five friends who venture into the woods for a weekend stay at a remote cabin is anything but ordinary.  Throw in a few horrific elements and you still haven't gotten too original.  Add in producer Joss Whedon, and shit starts to get real!

Going against the thread and giving audiences a complex story to sift through, Drew Goddard's The Cabin in the Woods is a unique and fun-filled adventure that is anything but what you'd expect.  And believe me, it is a good thing!

The twists and turns presented throughout are a blend of novel ideas and generic scares.  Combine the latter with Goddard's shot selection, and you can't help but recognize a strong homage to the 70s and 80s genre staple.

The acting isn't anything spectacular, but each holds their own with a crazy story that does what Whedon does best"”successfully integrate sci-fi elements into everyday life.  An absolutely unexpected cameo during the film's final minutes gives it a huge push, but the film is already sailing high by that point.  Veteran actors Jenkins and Whitford make sure of that, sharing a strong chemistry as they stir up countless laughs with their iconic one-liners and tedious banter.  It helps keep the mood light, complimenting the absurd cliché' movie moments that ultimately make Cabin in the Woods the fresh, hip movie experience that college guys have been waiting for.

About Stephen Davis

Stephen Davis
I owe this hobby/career to the one and only Stephanie Peterman who, while interning at Fox, told me that I had too many opinions and irrelevant information to keep it all bottled up inside. I survived my first rated R film, Alive, at the ripe age of 8, it took me months to grasp the fact that Julia Roberts actually died at the end of Steel Magnolias, and I might be the only person alive who actually enjoyed Sorority Row…for its comedic value of course. While my friends can drink you under the table, I can outwatch you when it comes iconic, yet horrid 80s films like Adventures in Babysitting and Troop Beverly Hills. I have no shame when it comes to what I like, and if you have a problem with that, then we’ll settle it on the racquetball court. I see too many movies to actually win any film trivia contest, so don’t waste your first pick on me. My friends rent movies from my bookcase shelves, and one day I do plan to start charging. I long to live in LA, where my movie obsession will actually help me fit in, but for now I am content with my home in Austin. I prefer indies to blockbusters, Longhorns to Sooners and Halloween to Friday the 13th. I miss the classics, as well as John Ritter, and I hope to one day sit down and interview the amazing Kate Winslet.
