SXSW Review: [REC] 3: Genesis

Director:Paco Plaza

Running Time:80.00

There is only so much you can do with a zombie film, and to be quite frank, most has already been done.  But that doesn't keep me from basking in the genre as I watch the world crumble amid the walking dead.  [REC] 3: Genesis is a solid entry into the genre, even if it does offers little in the form of creativity.

The film, which starts out as a 'found footage' piece and eventually switches over to the standard third-party viewpoint, follows our two leads as they walk down the aisle to join hands in Holy Matrimony.  And while the wedding goes off without a hitch, the reception ends in anything but eternal bliss.  The guests soon find themselves scrambling for their lives as an innocent dog bite leads to a wedding day massacre.  But a group of survivors will work together to escape the wrath of the devil and live happily ever after.

Though the setting is somewhat original, [REC] 3: Genesis wins over genre fans with a few key death sequences.  I won't go so far as to say that they are unique, but they did stir up some laughs (which is always a good sign for a film like this).

The acting isn't anything spectacular, but it also doesn't distract from the story.  Watching as our recently wed bride walks down a tunnel with a ripped dress and a chainsaw, you can't help but sit back and indulge in the greatness of it all.  Granted the film isn't perfect, but when you're talking about zombies, things just need to be fun.

About Stephen Davis

Stephen Davis
I owe this hobby/career to the one and only Stephanie Peterman who, while interning at Fox, told me that I had too many opinions and irrelevant information to keep it all bottled up inside. I survived my first rated R film, Alive, at the ripe age of 8, it took me months to grasp the fact that Julia Roberts actually died at the end of Steel Magnolias, and I might be the only person alive who actually enjoyed Sorority Row…for its comedic value of course. While my friends can drink you under the table, I can outwatch you when it comes iconic, yet horrid 80s films like Adventures in Babysitting and Troop Beverly Hills. I have no shame when it comes to what I like, and if you have a problem with that, then we’ll settle it on the racquetball court. I see too many movies to actually win any film trivia contest, so don’t waste your first pick on me. My friends rent movies from my bookcase shelves, and one day I do plan to start charging. I long to live in LA, where my movie obsession will actually help me fit in, but for now I am content with my home in Austin. I prefer indies to blockbusters, Longhorns to Sooners and Halloween to Friday the 13th. I miss the classics, as well as John Ritter, and I hope to one day sit down and interview the amazing Kate Winslet.
