SXSW Review: Fightville

Score:C+

Director:Petra Epperlein and Michael Tucker

Cast:Various

Running Time:85 Minutes

Rated:NR

Going into this documentary, I was unaware that it was made by Michael Tucker, whom I interviewed last year for How to Fold a Flag. His documentary last year was worth watching, but this one was even better. Fightville covers the fast growing but still misunderstood sport of mixed martial arts. As a fan of Tucker's previous war documentaries as well as Brazilian Jujitsu, I thought this film was both interesting and informative as you see the roots of this growing phenomenon up close as well as the training and mentality behind it.

The film is beautifully shot, and that says something for a film with quite a bit of real blood in your face. The directors chose to follow a couple of specific fighters closely, which provides an avenue for emotionally connecting to the topic, but towards the end, I felt like it could have wrapped up a few minutes sooner. I would have preferred more details about the history and specific rules of the sport- maybe some clarification regarding the different forms of MMA-but it wasn't my movie, and my "all-facts documentary" probably wouldn't have been as entertaining.

Audiences will take away a new understanding and respect for a commonly misunderstood and prejudged sport. This film is a good choice for MMA fans, sports fans, and documentary fans alike. Keep "˜em coming Michael Tucker; I'm impressed.

About Stephen Davis

Stephen Davis
I owe this hobby/career to the one and only Stephanie Peterman who, while interning at Fox, told me that I had too many opinions and irrelevant information to keep it all bottled up inside. I survived my first rated R film, Alive, at the ripe age of 8, it took me months to grasp the fact that Julia Roberts actually died at the end of Steel Magnolias, and I might be the only person alive who actually enjoyed Sorority Row…for its comedic value of course. While my friends can drink you under the table, I can outwatch you when it comes iconic, yet horrid 80s films like Adventures in Babysitting and Troop Beverly Hills. I have no shame when it comes to what I like, and if you have a problem with that, then we’ll settle it on the racquetball court. I see too many movies to actually win any film trivia contest, so don’t waste your first pick on me. My friends rent movies from my bookcase shelves, and one day I do plan to start charging. I long to live in LA, where my movie obsession will actually help me fit in, but for now I am content with my home in Austin. I prefer indies to blockbusters, Longhorns to Sooners and Halloween to Friday the 13th. I miss the classics, as well as John Ritter, and I hope to one day sit down and interview the amazing Kate Winslet.
