Sundance Review: Arbitrage

Score:B+

Director:Nicholas Jarecki

Cast:Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon, Tim Roth, Brit Marling, Nate Parker

Running Time:103.00

Rated:NR

Richard Gere has gotten better with time as he delivers one of the best performances of his career in Nicholas Jarecki's feature film debut Arbitrage.

In the film Gere plays Robert Miller, a man who wholesomely represents the portrait of success.  But on the night of his sixtieth birthday we witness Robert go to astronomical levels to sell his business before the extend of his fraud is uncovered.  But a late night drive will quickly challenge his perception as he struggles to comprehend just what things in his life are worth.

Surrounding Gere is one of the most impressive and evenly matched ensembles to hit the big screen in quite some time.  Susan Sarandon and Brit Marling go toe-to-toe with Gere as his wife and daughter respectively.  Their chemistry is undeniable as each delivers every line and action with heartfelt emotion.  Tim Roth plays the good/bad detective with exquisite precision, working hard to catch Robert in his game of lies and deceit.

The film moves at a fast pace, and while some will get lost in the antics that is corporate America, most will bask in the greatness that heeds when one of the most powerful men in the country looks to be losing everything.  With an ending that seems to be ripped straight out of a John Grisham novel, Arbitrage is simply too good to pass up!

Arbitrage is playing in the non-competitive Premiere category.

About Stephen Davis

Stephen Davis
I owe this hobby/career to the one and only Stephanie Peterman who, while interning at Fox, told me that I had too many opinions and irrelevant information to keep it all bottled up inside. I survived my first rated R film, Alive, at the ripe age of 8, it took me months to grasp the fact that Julia Roberts actually died at the end of Steel Magnolias, and I might be the only person alive who actually enjoyed Sorority Row…for its comedic value of course. While my friends can drink you under the table, I can outwatch you when it comes iconic, yet horrid 80s films like Adventures in Babysitting and Troop Beverly Hills. I have no shame when it comes to what I like, and if you have a problem with that, then we’ll settle it on the racquetball court. I see too many movies to actually win any film trivia contest, so don’t waste your first pick on me. My friends rent movies from my bookcase shelves, and one day I do plan to start charging. I long to live in LA, where my movie obsession will actually help me fit in, but for now I am content with my home in Austin. I prefer indies to blockbusters, Longhorns to Sooners and Halloween to Friday the 13th. I miss the classics, as well as John Ritter, and I hope to one day sit down and interview the amazing Kate Winslet.
