Universal and Blumhouse Team for New “Exorcist” Franchise in 2023

In the world of reboots and remakes, the horror genre has forever been an active player. But The Exorcist, arguably the most intense and iconic genre classic, has never gotten the treatment – until now.

Universal Pictures, NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock, and Blumhouse Productions recently closed a reported $400 million-plus deal for the franchise IP. The plan is for a set trilogy, with director David Gordon Green helming and original star Ellen Burstyn returning as a mother with a demon-possessed child.

The strategy is eerily similar to Green’s recent partnership with the studio for Halloween, a franchise that saw a resurgence thanks to its 2018 direct sequel, prompting a similar trilogy map. Franchise veteran Jamie Lee Curtis returned for that film, setting a franchise record of $255.6M worldwide. The team will hope to achieve the same success.

The first of the three films is currently set for an October 13, 2023 release.
