LIVE BLOG: The 2016 Oscars

[7:28PM CST] We are two minutes away!  Who's ready?!?!?!

[7:32PM CST] The opening montage.  Reminding us all how great (and how disappointing) the movies were in 2015!

[7:34PM CST] Cue Chris Rock's entrance...and the first black joke.

[7:34PM CST] That didn't take long.

[7:36PM CST] "Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna's panties." - Chris Rock

[7:41PM CST] "Hollywood is sorority racist."  Chris Rock gets it!

[7:44PM CST] Charlize Theron is rocking it!!!  Emily Blunt looks pretty too!!!

[7:45PM CST] First award is for Original Screenplay.  Feeling this one is Spotlight's to loose.  Though Straight Out of Compton could surprise given the cry for diversity.  Ex Machina is also in the mix.  But all bets on Spotlight.

[7:47PM CST] WINNER: Best Original Screenplay: SPOTLIGHT (Josh Singer & Tom McCarthy)

[7:49PM CST] Now the guys are up for Best Adapted Screenplay.  Expect The Big Short to take this one.  Little competition elsewhere, though I wouldn't be disappointed to see Room surprise.

[7:50PM CST] Ryan Gosling and Russel Crowe make a good team.  Potential future hosts?  They do have two Oscars between them!

[7:52PM CST] WINNER: Best Adapted Screenplay: THE BIG SHORT (Charles Randolph & Adam McKay)

[7:53PM CST] Not loving the scrolling thank yous at the bottom of the screen.

[7:59PM CST] Montage with black actors is hilarious!  Tracey Morgan and Kristin Wiig are amazing!!!

[8:01PM CST] WTF with Stacey Dash.  They must have thrown a shit ton of money in front her.  That was awkward, stupid....and awkward!

Stacey Dash at Oscars

[8:03PM CST] I like Sarah Silverman.  But that intro was terrible!  Stop trying to be funny.

[8:05PM CST] Sam Smith delivers with performance of Spectre theme "Writing's On the Wall"

[8:09PM CST] J.K. Simmons just walked out on stage to "The Time of My Life" from Dirty Dancing.  Seems not entirely right.  But Best Supporting Actress is finally here!

[8:10PM CST] Rooting for Winslet (Steve Jobs) here.  It will either be hers or Alicia Vikander for her work in The Danish Girl.  Many loved her in that and Ex Machina.  But fingers crossed for a Winslet victory.

[8:12PM CST] WINNER: Best Supporting Actress: ALICIA VIKANDER (The Danish Girl)

[8:13PM CST] Ah.  So great to see someone who is truly excited to be on the stage.  Classy and professional...but excited! Hopefully she doesn't fall victim to the Best Supporting Actress curse.  Never heard of it...ask Kim Basinger or Melissa Leo.)

[8:19PM CST] Chris Rock throws a lesbian porn joke into the mix as he introduces Cate Blanchett.  Since Carol is nominated, does this give them the edge for Best Costume Design?

[8:20PM CST] WINNER: Best Costume Design: MAD MAX: FURY ROAD  (Jenny Beavan)

[8:21PM CST] This could be a good sign for the younger swinging action film.  Though Jenny might be credited with the worst acceptance speech of the night (though the night is still young).

[8:22PM CST] Tina Fey and Steve Carrel are set to present Best Production Design.  And there dialogue is actually better than that in their co-starring film Date Night.  Expect Mad Max: Fury Road to take this.  The Revenant could spoil though both are worthy winners.

[8:20PM CST] WINNER: Best Production Design: MAD MAX: FURY ROAD  (Colin Gibson & Lisa Thompson)

[8:25PM CST] Damn they are speeding through these lower interest awards.  Quickly segueing into Best Make-Up & Hairstyling.  Again, Mad Max: Fury Road should win here.  Though The Revenant wouldn't be a big spoiler.  Both did well!

[8:26PM CST] WINNER: Best Make-Up & Hairstyling: MAD MAX: FURY ROAD  (Lesley Vanderwalkt, Elka Wardega & Damian Martin)

[8:28PM CST] They are all lesser known awards thus far; however, Mad Max: Fury Road has now won more Oscars than heavy hitters like DreamgirlsLittle Miss Sunshine and JFK.  #OscarsSoHip

[8:36PM CST] Introducing anyone as a "should be" nominee is awkward.  Even if it Michael B. Jordan! Best Cinematography is up now.  The Revenant should take home its first award of the night here.

[8:37PM CST] WINNER: Best Cinematography: THE REVENANT (Emmanuel Lubezki)

[8:38PM CST] Damn.  A three-peat.  At what point does winning not become exciting any more?

[8:39PM CST] They are going through the filmmaking process?  Why is Supporting Actress important so early in the process?

[8:39PM CST] Best Film Editing - should be Mad Max: Fury Road, but The Big Short will likely walk away the winner.

[8:40PM CST] WINNER: Best Film Editing: MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (Margaret Sixel)

[8:40PM CST] Tonight is likely going to be huge for Mad Max: Fury Road.

[8:42PM CST] Race joke was funny in the beginning - getting a bit old.  Though I do love seeing Angela Bassett.

[8:46PM CST] Achievement in Sound Editing.  Still wish they would go into detail as to what these people do that is different than Sound Mixing.  Either way, let's go with The Revenant here.

[8:47PM CST] WINNER: Best Sound Editing: MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (Mark Mangini & David White)

[8:51PM CST] Sound Mixing is up.  Don't see why Mad Max: Fury Road wouldn't repeat.

[8:52PM CST] WINNER: Best Sound Mixing: MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (Chris Jenkins, Gregg Rudloff & Ben Osmo)

[8:54PM CST] The Andy Serkis side-by-side might have just made my night!

[8:55PM CST] So many jokes out there for Donald Trump - yet tonight there hasn't been a good one yet.

[8:56PM CST] Can Mad Max: Fury Road make it another one.

[8:57PM CST] WINNER: Best Visual Effects: EX MACHINA (Andrew Whitehurst, Paul Norris, Mark Ardington & Sarah Bennett)

[8:57PM CST] Damn.  Well deserved, but didn't see this one coming at all!!!  Still, glad that Ex Machina is getting some love.  Fantastic film that went heavily overlooked this year.

[8:58PM CST] We need an important award...now!  These speeches are uninspiring and the awards are bland.  Let's pick up the pace.  This is becoming worse than the Grammies...and that is definitely not a good thing!

[9:00PM CST] Bringing in the robots of Star Wars, nice play Academy...staying relevant I see.  Or trying to at least.  (Isn't working.)

[9:07PM CST] Girl Scout cookies are now available!!!  Thankfully they aren't in my living room - there is no way I'd make rent tomorrow!

Chris Rock Sells Daughters Girl Scout Cookies

[9:08PM CST] The minions are on the stage to present Best Animated Short.  Consolation prize for not being nominated?  #OscarsNotYellow

[9:09PM CST] WINNER: Best Animated Short: BEAR STORY

[9:09PM CST] First ever Oscar for Chile thanks to Bear Story's win!

[9:10PM CST] Buzz and Woody are back to give Inside Out the award for Best Animated Feature.  This award has been determined since this summer!

[9:11PM CST] WINNER: Best Animated Feature: INSIDE OUT

[9:12PM CST] Love Pete Doctor! Inside Out changed the game for animated features.

[9:14PM CST] Kevin Hart throwing out more equality talk regarding those not nominated.  And he does realize he is getting A LOT more attention than any other year - front seat or not.

[9:17PM CST] The Weekend did good with "Earned It" but I feel like I've heard that song for the last year.  How is it just now being nominated.

[9:22PM CST] OMG!  Kate Winslet (in hot glasses) and Reese Witherspoon on the same stage.  LIFE...MADE!!!

[9:24PM CST] Chris returs to the racist topic.  He does realize that he hit the nail on the head with his opening.

[9:28PM CST] Finally, another acting nomination.  Patricia Arquette looks amazing (again, with the glasses)...time to give Stallone his due.

[9:28PM CST] Can we fix that camera angle.  Terrible!!!

[9:29PM CST] Would love to see a Hardy win here, but no sense betting against Balboa.  This one is Sylvestor's to loose.

[9:31PM CST] WINNER: Best Supporting Actor: MARK RYLANCE (Bridge of Spies)

[9:32PM CST] Rylance was the early favorite but lost some steam down the stretch.  Worthy performance in a film that I personally really enjoyed!

[9:33PM CST] Amazing words about Spielberg.  Humbled and soft spoken, Rylance keeps it simple and effective.

[9:37PM CST] Louis C.K. tries to make Best Documentary Short Film relevant.  Not working.  Regardless, A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness  should be taking home the gold (and according to Louis, never getting rich).

[9:40PM CST] WINNER: Best Documentary Short Subject: A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness

[9:40PM CST] Tow time winner - damn Sharmeen Obaid-Chinay, share the love! #OscarHog

[9:41PM CST] Um...what happened to Dev Patel?  Guess Frieda Pinto had a lot to do with that.

[9:42PM CST] Best Documentary Feature should be going to Amy, though The Look of Silence could surprise.

[8:43PM CST] WINNER: Best Documentary Feature: AMY

[9:43PM CST] I called this after I saw the film back in July.  Hugely deserved!!!  Fantastic doc!

[9:44PM CST] Rock's child labor joke was a misfire.  And how many more times will they say that Lady Gaga's performance is coming up?  Liars!

[9:47PM CST] Commercial break reflection...sad that Winslet didn't hold up her end of the bargain for a Titanic double victory with co-star DiCaprio.  Grrrrr.

[9:50PM CST] Whoopi Goldberg hasn't been relevant since hosting the 2002 Oscars (and even that is debatable).  Sure she realizes that she is benefiting most from the racial controversy, right?!?!

[9:52PM CST] Wait, the Academy president isn't white?!?!  #WTF Kidding...kind of.

[9:55PM CST] "In Memoriam" is sad, but always features my favorite musical performances of the telecast.

Oscars 2016 In Memorium Image

[9:58PM CST] Heartbreaking to be reminded how many of these lives were taken by cancer.

[10:03PM CST] Kids presenting for Best Live Action Short...even the Academy doesn't take this award seriously.  That being said, Shok should win here.

[10:04PM CST] WINNER: Best Short Live Action: STUTTERER

[10:05PM CST] Missed this one.

[10:07PM CST] Ummm...having minorities present for Best Foreign Language Film is more racist than the "white" controversy.  Buuuttt...Son of Saul has this one locked.  Was one of the best films of the year and deserved a Best Picture nomination.

[10:08PM CST] WINNER: Best Foreign Language Film: SON OF SAUL (Hungary)

[10:08PM CST] If you haven't seen Son of Saul, it is worth your time.  Truly tragic and visually mesmerizing.  Have a box of tissues handy.

[10:11PM CST] No offense but Joe Biden has no place on that stage.  He speaks the truth...but still, the show is not meant for politicians.  Keep it to the artist.

[10:12PM CST] And finally...that Lady Gaga performance they have been talking about for the last hour or so.  Rumor has it she has a writing credit for a line or two that she changed late in the game.  Tweaking for a statue!

[10:15PM CST] Powerful performance of "It Happens to You".  Not a great song...but an important subject that deserves your attention.  Wish the typical Lady Gaga theatrics had been left out though.  Nonetheless, powerful moment.

[10:20PM CST] With ten minutes left in the award show (yea right), Best Original Score is the next award to be handed out.  This is The Hateful Eights to loose.  Star Wars appears the only one threatening to take that away.

[10:23PM CST] WINNER: Best Original Score: Ennio Morricone (The Hateful Eight)

[10:23PM CST] It is so depressing how far back they force the lesser known nominees to sit.  You'd think there was no way in hell they'd win with how far they have to walk to accept their award.

[10:25PM CST] Can The Weekend upset Lady Gaga and prevent Diane Warren from getting her first win (after eight nominations).  I'm assuming that the two songs that weren't preformed won't be winning!

[10:26PM CST] For those that care...I actually loved "Simple Song No. 3".  Again, just in case you cared.

[10:27PM CST] WINNER: Best Original Song: Jimmy Napes & Sam Smith for Writing's On the Wall (Spectre)

[10:27PM CST] Appears that both Gaga and Warren will have to wait.  And the audience appears shocked!!!!

[10:29PM CST] Sam Smith might have just given the acceptance speech of the night!  Turned the awkwardly silent audience around quickly - thankfully!

[10:31PM CST] We officially welcome all those who set their DVRs.  The show still has the four biggest awards left, which would set any big movie fan off!

[10:36PM CST] J.J. Abrams is presenting Best Director.  Again... #OscarsSoHip

[10:36PM CST] I honestly won't be disappointed if Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu makes it two in a row.  The Revenant was amazing.  BUT...with the early wins, George Miller could pull the upset Mad Max: Fury Road.  But

[10:38PM CST] WINNER: Best Director: Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (The Revenant)

[10:38PM CST] Well deserved.  Truly a magical film that is a true testament to the process of filmmaking.

Director of Revenant Makes it 2 for 2 Photo

[10:44PM CST] Thanks Eddie...can you just give the award to Brie so we can get to Leo already?!?!

[10:46PM CST] Oh wow, I totally forgot Jennifer Lawrence was even nominated.  Shocked the cameras haven't been all over her tonight for the "young" vote.

[10:48PM CST] WINNER: Best Actress: Brie Larson (Room)

[10:52PM CST] Ahhh...Juliane Moore gets to give Leo his Oscar.  Can you imagine the shit any actor will get if they beat Leo this year?!

[10:53PM CST] Cranston might upset as Trumbo...but I'm shocked anyone else is even nominated.

[10:54PM CST] Of all the clips available, that is the one they choose for DiCaprio's work in The Revenant?

[10:54PM CST] WINNER: Best Actor: Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant)

[10:57PM CST] Was there any real doubt?  DiCaprio wins his first Oscar for what many consider to be his most challenging role of his career!

[10:59PM CST] Leonardo DiCaprio has probably the best line of the entire show.  "I don't take any of this for granted."  Tremendous acceptance speech that incorporated environment issues.

[11:00PM CST] Ha. Morgan Freeman seems as good as any presenter for Best Picture.  I want The Revenant to win here.  But word is that Spotlight has this one.  I'll accept the defeat...for the DiCaprio win!

[11:00PM CST] WINNER: Best Film: SPOTLIGHT

[11:01PM CST] Great film.  It won the first and the last award of the night.  Solid bookend!

[11:06PM CST] Sadly in 50 years everyone will remember the 2016 Oscars as Leo's win.  But still, great night and congrats to Spotlight and all the winners.  Until next year....See you at the movies!!

About Stephen Davis

Stephen Davis
I owe this hobby/career to the one and only Stephanie Peterman who, while interning at Fox, told me that I had too many opinions and irrelevant information to keep it all bottled up inside. I survived my first rated R film, Alive, at the ripe age of 8, it took me months to grasp the fact that Julia Roberts actually died at the end of Steel Magnolias, and I might be the only person alive who actually enjoyed Sorority Row…for its comedic value of course. While my friends can drink you under the table, I can outwatch you when it comes iconic, yet horrid 80s films like Adventures in Babysitting and Troop Beverly Hills. I have no shame when it comes to what I like, and if you have a problem with that, then we’ll settle it on the racquetball court. I see too many movies to actually win any film trivia contest, so don’t waste your first pick on me. My friends rent movies from my bookcase shelves, and one day I do plan to start charging. I long to live in LA, where my movie obsession will actually help me fit in, but for now I am content with my home in Austin. I prefer indies to blockbusters, Longhorns to Sooners and Halloween to Friday the 13th. I miss the classics, as well as John Ritter, and I hope to one day sit down and interview the amazing Kate Winslet.
