The 87th Oscars: The LIVE Blog

[11:10pm] Thanks for joining us for our second ever live blog.  Hope you enjoyed it.  Until next year...

[11:08pm] Alright.  Another year of movies is now officially in the book.  Tons of surprises, and the Academy obviously didn't care too much for Boyhood.  They loved Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel.  Oh, and Whiplash.  They got some much deserved attention tonight.

[11:04pm]  WINNER - BIRDMAN - Best Picture

[11:04pm]  Sean Penn...a fine choice for Best Film presented.  Routing for American Sniper, but this one is likely going to Boyhood.  With both Grand Budapest Hotel and Birdman serving as spoilers.

[11:03pm]  Finally that whole "Oscar Predictions" joke has run its course...after a few wrong turns and missed exits.

[11:00pm]  Just think, if both Jupiter Ascending and The Seventh Son had waited a few weeks to be released they could have used "Oscar winner" in their marketing campiagin thanks to both Eddie Redmayne and Julianne Moore's wins tonight.  No Eddie Murphy/Norbit curse here.  Crazy how these things work out.

[10:55pm]  WINNER - JULIANNE MOORE - STILL ALICE - Best Actress

[10:53pm]  Alright...Matthew takes the stage to present Best Actress.  Most people don't know, but this award was handed to Julianne Moore upon arrival.  This is all just for show.

[10:51pm]  WINNER - EDDIE REDMAYNE - THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING - Best Actor

[10:50pm]  Cate Blanchett to present the award for Best Actor.  This one is down between Michael Keaton for Birdman and Eddie Redmayne for The Theory of Everything.  I'm secretly pulling for Bradley Cooper for his work in American Sniper.  But all things considered, this is likely going to Keaton.

[10:43pm]  A bit of a surprise...but not a terrible surprise.  Well earned...but nothing extrodinary.

[10:42pm]  WINNER - BIRDMAN - Best Director

[10:41pm]  After being snubed for Best Director, the Academy gave him a Best Picture win.  Now he has been invited back to present Best Director.  Most likely this is going to Richard LInklater for Boyhood.  That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if Birdman or The Grand Budapest Hotel surprises.

[10:35pm]  WINNER - THE IMITATION GAME - Best Adapted Screenplay

[10:34pm]  Oprah...I guess the Academy accepted her terms for showing up tonight as she prsents for Best Adapted Screenplay.  This has Imitation Game written all over it.

[10:30pm]  I wonder if Alejandro González Iñárritu's interpreter will get an Oscar as well!

[10:30pm]  WINNER - BIRDMAN - Best Original Screenplay

[10:30pm]  Best Original Screenplay - my money is on Birdman, though a Boyhood spoiler could be present.

[10:29pm]  Eddie Murphy got invited back to the show?!?!!?!  I'm in shock.

[10:24pm]  WINNER - THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL - Best Original Score

[10:23pm]  The lovely Ms. Andrews is set to present the award for Best Score.  The Grand Budapeset Hotel will likely take this one home.  But, The Imitation Game could just as easily way away with it.

[10:21pm]  JULIE ANDREWS!!!!!!!

[10:20pm]  Okay, Lady Gaga did well.  But why are we paying tribute to the film?

[10:10pm]  A dedication to The Sound of Music...one of my favorite films of all time!

[10:07pm]  WINNER - SELMA: "GLORY" - Best Original Song

[10:05pm]  Best Original Song- "Glory" from Selma has this one all wrapped up.  But I'd love to see The LEGO Movie pull the upset.

[10:04pm]  Idena Menzel gets to come back on stage after the ridiculous mishap last year.  And cudos to John Travolta for playing along.

[9:59pm]  John Legend and Common take the stage for "Glory" from Selma, the frontrunner for the Song Oscar...which will likely be awarded next.

[9:59pm]  Now Octavia gets some well earned Oscar spotlight.

[9:57pm]  This whole "Prediction Box" thing has gone on way too long.

[9:50pm]  WINNER - CITIZEN FOUR - Best Documentary

[9:49pm]  And now for two acclaimed snubs to annouce Best Documentary.  This one is Citizen Four's to lose.

[9:45pm]  Terrance Howard presents Big PIcture nominees Whiplash, The Imitation Game and Selma.  The academy is working to even out the diversity issue that they have been criticized for over the last several weeks.

[9:45pm]  That was another major upset for Whiplash.  Academy must be pretty fond of this picture.

[9:43pm]  WINNER - WHIPLASH - Best Editing

[9:43pm]  Bennedict and Naomi are set to present the award for Achievement in Film Editing.  This one should go to Boyhood.  American Sniper could play upset, unless the Acamdey loves Grand Budapest.

[9:39pm]  No Joan Rivers mention in the In Memorandum - now that is a true Oscar sub.  She's covered the event for years.

[9:31pm]  Meryl Streep is definitely the best person to introduce the 'In Memorandum' section of the show.

[9:25pm]  WINNER - BIRDMAN - Best Cinematography

[9:24pm]  Winner here is likely Birdman.  Grand Budapest Hotel is a potential spoiler.

[9:24pm]  Idris Elba and Jessica Chastain for Cinematography.  Again Adacemy, you have my attention!

[9:22pm]  WINNER - THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL - The Production Design

[9:21pm]  Up next is Best Production Design.  I'm going for The Grand Budapest Hotel.  Possible upset for Into the Woods.

[9:20pm]  Chris Pratt and Felicity Jones.  Okay, you've got my attention.

[9:18pm]  Another amazing speech from the President of the Academy!

[9:08pm]  John Lasseter is this year's Harvey Weinstein.

[9:06pm]  WINNER - BIG HERO 6 - Best Animated Film

[9:03pm]  A weird joke that Animated Feature leads us to Zoe Saldana and The Rock who are going to annouce the award!!!  My money is on Big Hero 6.  The only potential upset I see here is How to Train Your Dragon 2.

[9:07pm]  WINNER - FEAST - Annimated Short Film

[9:05pm]  Expect a win for Feast.  It is the only one that I've seen.  So I'm of course expecting a vidtory!

[9:03pm]  Kevin Hart and Anna Kendrick are now set to annouce for Best Animated Short.

[9:04pm]  WINNER - INTERSTELLAR - Best Visual Effects

[9:03pm]  Achievement in Visual Effects is up next.  Likely going to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, though I wouldn't be surprised with a Guardians of the Galaxy or Interstellar upset

[8:57pm]  Mockingjay found its way into the ceremony.  With Jennifer Lawrence not being nomiated this year, Josh Hutcherson is introducing "Greatful" from Beyond the Lights.  Rita Ora has takent he stage!

[8:55pm]  Am I the only one who hates it when winners read off their speech.  So tacky.  Great, you thought you were gonna win.  Don't have to scream it!

[8:53pm]  WINNER - PATRICIA ARQUETTE - BOYHOOD - Best Supporting Actress

[8:51pm]  Jared Leto is set to announce for Best Supporting Actress.  This is Patricia Arquette's to lose.  Possible Emma Stone dark horse.  But don't bet on it.

[8:49pm]  Whew.  Back on track again.

[8:49pm]  WINNER - AMERICAN SNIPER

[8:49pm]  For Sound Editing I'm going to stick with American Sniper.  Though Interstellar could play the role of dark horse.

[8:47pm]  That marks the first upset of the night.  Might set the stage for American Sniper the rest of the night.  Lets hope not.

[8:46pm]  WINNER - WHIPLASH

[8:46pm]  Sound Mixing is up next.  Expect Chris Evans to annoucne American Sniper victorious.

[8:44pm]  Academy Scientific Tech Awards = #boring

[8:43pm]  Neil Patrick Harris sporting some impressive whitey tighties!!!

[8:37pm]  Tim McGraw preforming "I'm Not Going to Miss You" from Glenn Campbell...I'll Be Me.

[8:35pm]  Awkward moment with NPH and David Oyelowo.  Granted Annie was not good!

[8:30pm]  Viola Davis is always amazing.  Too bad she is stuck with talking about the Governor's Ball.  #boring

[8:30pm]  Thank you Neil.

[8:30pm]  WTH.  That dress.

[8:29pm]  WINNER - CRISIS HOTLINE: VETERANS PRESS 1

[8:28pm]  Best Documentary Short is up next - shoud be going to Crisis Hotline.

[8:27pm]  WINNER - THE PHONE CALL

[8:25pm] Jason Bateman and Kerry Washington take the stage for Best Live Action Short Film.  I have no idea where this one will be going.  But for shits and giggles I'll go with Parvaneh.

[8:18pm]  Is that Andy Samberg doing a cameo.  Priceless!

[8:16pm]  Marion Colltiard gets introduced as an Oscar winner, with no mention of her nomination tonight.  And my roommate says that her dress is hidious.  So there is that.  She is introducing "Everythign is Awesome" from The Lego Movie.

[8:13pm]  Sherlee McClain has been nominated six times?  Who knew?  Anways, she makes her way back up to the Oscar stage to introduce Boyhood, The Theory of Everything and Birdman both Best Picture nominees.

[8:11pm]  I've met the director of Ida.  I should probably post that interview soon.  But happy for him.  Very unique film that deserves the extra attention!

[8:10pm]  WINNER: IDA

[8:07pm]  And Best Foreign Language Film is next.  Expect Ida from Poland to win this one in a rather tight race.  Timbutuccould also take it home.

[8:04pm]  Worst joke so far tonight as Neil Patrick Harris introduces Kidman.

[8:04pm]  Channing Tatum got a stripper joke.  And every woman in the audience just swooned in anticipation for the upcoming Magic Mike sequel.  Settle down ladies, Tatum is completely clothed for this appearence.

[8:02pm]  WINNER: THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL

[8:00pm]  Reese Witherspoon is looking amazing tonight!  She is presenting the awards for Make-Up.  Expect The Grand Budapest Hotel to take this one as well.

[7:58pm]  WINNER: THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL

[7:56pm]  Jennifer Lopez and Chris Pine to hand out the award for Achievement in Costume Design.  This one is likely going to The Grand Budapest Hotel.  Both Malificent and Into the Woods could play spoiler.

[7:49pm]  Dakota Johnson sure is getting around.  She's here to introduce Adam Levine who is preforming "Lost Stars" from Begin Again, a highly underrated film that somehow got lost in the summer shuffle of indie releases.

[7:47pm]  So nice of Liam Neeson to take a break from saving someone in the forthcoming Taken 4 to introduce Best Picture nominees The Grand Budapest Hotel and American Sniper.

[7:46pm]  Not sure why we care about Neil Patrick Harris' Oscar predictions, but okay.

[7:43pm]  A truly enjoyable acceptance speech about family and calling your parents.  Thanks J.K.

[7:41pm]  WINNER: JK SIMMONS - WHIPLASH Best Supporting Actor

[7:39pm]  Continuing a string that started last year, Best Supporting Actor is first up. J.K. Simmons likely has this one wrapped up for his work in Whiplash.  Potential sporiler: Mark Ruffalo for Foxcatcher.  But Simmons should be all gold tonight.

[7:37pm]  Oh man, I thought the song was going to replace the monologue.  But I'll take an "Oraph is rich" joke any day.

[7:36pm]  My hat is off to Neil Patrick Harris...a unique and highly entertaining opening.

[7:34pm]  No better cameo than Anna Kendrick and Jack Black...Neil Patrick Harris has just been upstaged at his own show!

[7:31pm]  It took 30 seconds for the first race joke to make its way out.  Thanks Neil!

[7:26pm]  One of the most competitive Oscars is only minutes away.  Should be a night of surprises.  Stay turned for updates detailing the show and the winners!

About Stephen Davis

Stephen Davis
I owe this hobby/career to the one and only Stephanie Peterman who, while interning at Fox, told me that I had too many opinions and irrelevant information to keep it all bottled up inside. I survived my first rated R film, Alive, at the ripe age of 8, it took me months to grasp the fact that Julia Roberts actually died at the end of Steel Magnolias, and I might be the only person alive who actually enjoyed Sorority Row…for its comedic value of course. While my friends can drink you under the table, I can outwatch you when it comes iconic, yet horrid 80s films like Adventures in Babysitting and Troop Beverly Hills. I have no shame when it comes to what I like, and if you have a problem with that, then we’ll settle it on the racquetball court. I see too many movies to actually win any film trivia contest, so don’t waste your first pick on me. My friends rent movies from my bookcase shelves, and one day I do plan to start charging. I long to live in LA, where my movie obsession will actually help me fit in, but for now I am content with my home in Austin. I prefer indies to blockbusters, Longhorns to Sooners and Halloween to Friday the 13th. I miss the classics, as well as John Ritter, and I hope to one day sit down and interview the amazing Kate Winslet.
