“How to Talk to Girls at Parties” Pits Punks Against Aliens

Based on a short story by the imaginative Neil Gaiman, and directed by John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch), How to Talk to Girls at Parties seems like your typical teenage story at first.

Enn (Alex Sharp) is a normal London teenager in 1977 who likes sneaking out with his friends to punk shows. Things begin to go off the rails when his friends crash a trippy party full of eccentric teenagers, including the mysterious Zan (Elle Fanning). As Enn and Zan start to fall for one another, Enn learns that Zan and her family are actually aliens, and their budding relationship sets off a series of events destined to pit punks against aliens.

The trailer, full of bright, mod-like sets contrasted with the dulled and edgy palette of the punk scene, promises a fun visual adventure with plenty of dry humor and a good heart. The film also stars Nicole Kidman, Ruth Wilson and Matt Lucas. Watch the trailer below and catch the film in theaters on May 18.
