Thanks to exceptional buzz after its screening at the Toronto International Film Festival last month, Fox Searchlight quickly picked up U.S. distribution rights to Pablo Larrain’s Jackie.
The film, which stars Oscar winner Natalie Portman in the title role, follows the former First Lady in the days following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. To coincide with the film’s award season-friendly release date of December 9th the studio has rushed to give viewers a basic, though chilling teaser trailer.
In the teaser we get a voiceover featuring a strong, historic speech as the film shows highlights of Portman’s depiction of the iconic First Lady. Though she doesn’t speak until the last seconds, her presence ignites a wealth of emotion as you find yourself fixated on her every move.
While I don’t feel that you should see Jackie merely based on its Oscar potential, critics and audiences alike have praised Larrain’s unique approach to biography, as well as Portman’s portrayal, spawning a great deal of award season talk. If you are one that likes to keep up with the Oscar conversation, this is one you probably need to add to your watch-list.
The film co-stars Peter Sargaard, Greta Gerwig, Billy Crudup and John Hurt.
