Sundance Review: Which Way Is the Front Line From Here? The Life and Time of Tim Hetherington

Score:B+

Director:Sebastian Junger

Cast:Various

Running Time:79.00

Rated:NR

This movie is as powerful as they come. Tim Herthington possesses a quality that few humans have, let alone filmmakers. His ability to capture the raw feelings of soldiers and civilians trapped inside the chaos of war is unlike anything I've ever seen. It takes incredible bravery to live life as Tim Hertherington, and this film does a decent job of telling his tale.

Chronicling highlights of Tim's career, the film is a series of interviews and raw footage. It follows him as he films and shoots rebels forces in Africa, American soldiers for the Oscar-nominated film Restrepo, and finally where he meets an untimely end covering the conflict in Libya in 2011. He not only took pictures, but he also befriended the people he captured on film. He lived with them, ate with them, and was there when some of them were taken from the earth. There is a scene in particular that sticks out in my mind during the filming of Restrepo, where they lost a member of their platoon to an ambush and Tim saw the wrath of a soldier who just lost a best friend. It was disheartening but something necessary to see in order to get a firm grasp on what Tim and other photojournalists just like him deal with when they do what they do best. See this movie.
