Sundance Review: That’s What She Said

Director:Carrie Preston

Running Time:90.00

Rated:NR

It is so refreshing to see a film that showcases women's
sexuality as a part of everyday life. It shouldn't be hid behind or expressed
simply in the way we dress or comb our hair.  In film, we find men who endlessly talk about hilarious, hostile
take-overs involving their penises; women should be able to discuss yeast
infections or shaving off their pubic hair on camera in similar fashion.  That's
What She Said finally gives us females a voice "“ a brutally honest one at
that!

That's
What She Said, which is based on the popular stage play by the same name,
follows a day in the life of Bebe, (DeBonis) as she plans for a day of beauty,
shopping, and advice, all of which leads up to a highly anticipated date. She
hasn't had one in a while and wants things to be perfect. Her best friend DeeDee
(Heche) is a pill-popping, chain-smoking drunk who is bitter from a previous
break-up and has an unquenchable desire to bring everyone/everything she sees
down to her level. The pair meet a girl, Clementine, at a coffee shop, and from
that point on it is a whirlwind of shouting, public masturbation, bad haircuts,
buried secrets, and mental breakdowns.

Director Carrie Preston channels
her inner Woody Allen with this strong, all female cast (going as far as to
only show a single male face during the film's entirety).  Ultimately creating the perfect adventure
for the male and female moviegoer alike.

That's What She Said is competing in the Next Competition.
