Sundance Review: Sound of My Voice

Score:A-

Director:Zal Batmanglij

Cast:Brit Marling, Christopher Denham, Nicole Vicius, Avery Pohl

Running Time:85 Minutes

Rated:NR

When you're about to watch two people pretend to join a cult,
whose leader believes she's from the future, you're expecting a riveting
experience. Fortunately, Sound Of My
Voice was just that.

Peter and Lorna want to make a documentary film and they want it
to be about Maggie, a cult leader living in a basement of an unidentified
house. Maggie tells people that she's from the future and that she's only
picking the right people to experience the future with her.

The film could've gone in many wrong directions and I give a lot
of credit to Batmanglij for not letting that happen. The story was fluid and
the characters were surprisingly realistic. It's as if Sound of My Voice was convincing the audience to join the cult
along with Peter and Lorna, and I loved that.

What I didn't like were the loose ends it left. Even after
hearing that there will probably be a sequel, I was still frustrated that they
would choose not to wrap up a few key issues.

Sound of My Voice had
me glued to the screen and on the edge of my seat. I'm happy the film provided
the audience with a great story even if it left me with questions.
