Sundance Review: Results

Score:C+

Director:Andrew Bujalski

Cast:Guy Pearce, Cobie Smulders, Kevin Corrigan

Running Time:105 Minutes

Rated:NR

Filmed in Austin, Texas, Results tells the story of Danny (Kevin Corrigan), a bored millionaire with too much money and too little to do. Deciding he wants to get in shape, Danny meets Trevor (Guy Pearce), an enthusiastic personal trainer with his own gym and a fleet of personal trainers, including Danny's trainer Kat (Cobie Smulders). What begins as a film about Danny quickly turns into a film about Trevor and Kat as Danny realizes their relationship is incredibly complicated "“ just like this script. Results tries too hard and tries to be too many things at once and in doing so collapses.

Each actor tries their hardest to make the script work. Smulders is great as the acerbic Kat and Pearce throws himself whole-heartedly into Trevor's enthusiasm as a veneer for his insecurities while Corrigan easily takes up the slob mantle that Danny wears so proudly. However, none of that helps the film be any more compelling. It became increasingly clear as the film meandered on that if there was a central storyline, they were in no hurry to emphasize or dwell on it.

Without a more solid script, there was no emotional investment in the characters. The most entertaining part became the setting "“ Austin "“ and that's probably because I live there. The result of Results is a meandering mess with no emotional buy-in, as much as the actors tried to convince me otherwise.
