Review: Penguins of Madagascar

Score:B+

Director:J.P. Simon, Simon J. Smith

Cast:Christopher Knights, John Malkovich, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ken Jeong

Running Time:92 Minutes

Rated:PG

Starring perhaps the most enjoyable part of the Madagascar franchise, Penguins of Madagascar follows the exploits of the espionage quartet as they combat Dr. Octavius Brine and try to foil his plans to destroy the world. Throughout the film, there is the thread that Skipper values each team member as a prized member of the quartet. All except poor Private. Perhaps this is a good lesson for the holiday season that everyone should be valued equally.

With the quick-witted jokes flying constantly, any that fall flat are quickly forgotten in this fast-moving adventure. The addition of the North Wind, a similar multi-species crime-fighting quartet, adds a new dimension to the franchise that will more than likely result in a spin-off sometime in the near future.

While some things clearly work better than others, the vibe overall is enjoyable for all ages. The Warner Herzog documentary joke at the beginning of the film will more than likely sail over the heads of the younger demographic, but the adults in the theater will get a good laugh. The puns using Hollywood actors names are equally as amusing to note ("Kevin, keep Bacon."). It's also possible that I find such things entertaining.

The action is often so fast-paced that I wonder if the writers have some form of A.D.D. since the film appears to be made for such an audience. Thankfully, it's fast enough to keep the kids entertained, and the story resolves quickly. Sadly, there's no room for anything like character development or intrigue. Everything is exactly what you think it's going to be "“ no room for any plot twists with this one.

Penguins of Madagascar is great fun for all ages. It's definitely good Thanksgiving movie fare for the whole family. Everyone will be entertained on some level. Just don't expect deep, meaningful plot points. It's just not that kind of movie.
