Sundance Review: In a World…

Score:A

Director:Lake Bell

Cast:Lake Bell, Ken Marino, Demetri Martin, Rob Corddry, Michaela Watkins

Running Time:93 Minutes

Rated:NR

Lake Bell. She is so amazing it makes me sick, especially in
this original film. With stunning performances by Demitri Martin, Ken Marino,
and a particularly heartbreaking performance by Rob Corddry, In a World is one of the most enjoyable
movies I've seen in years.

Set in present-day Los
Angeles, Lake Bell plays a female voice-over actor trying to break into the
business. Working against the male-dominated grain in the business is hard
enough, but having to break the glass ceiling in her own family is the biggest
challenge she faces, as her father is already a well established voice. This
movie chronicles her successes and failures as well as the ups and downs of
regular life. Shot tremendously well and stocked with a lovely cast, this movie
makes the audience look inward and wonder how well they would do when they
realize that sometimes you have to look out for yourself because no one else is
going to do it.

How well would we all do without the safety net of family and
friends? If we had to rely on just our self-esteem to achieve our dreams? Most
of us don't believe in ourselves as much as we should, and this film touches on
that without coming across as cliché. The movie is rich in dark humor (much
like life) and helps the audience to realize that this too shall pass. I want
to watch it again and again with my sister while eating a pile of cookie dough.
