Relying heavily on his characters' lively personalities and the audiences' explosive imaginations, Pedro Almodóvar's I'm So Excited! is the very definition of a hit or miss affair.  Fortunately, I enjoyed the film, though not nearly as much as I had expected given Almodóvar's recent run of raw, authentic character studies.  Either way, it is nice to see a more playful side of the Oscar-winning director.

Set almost entirely on a plane that is experiencing technical difficulties, Almodóvar uses a unique blend of characters as he creates drama through witty dialogue, ironic situations, and hilarious encounters.  Never a dull moment, the film often ventures into a state of ridiculousness as crew members opt to drug everyone in coach and enjoy shots of alcohol as they discuss their love lives-- all while maintaining order and avoiding a crisis with those sitting in first class.  But when the lives of those on the plane begin to surface, it becomes quite apparent that everyone on the flight has something to learn as they glare death in the eyes.

Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz offer up short cameo appearances in the film's opening scene, but from then on, the film ventures into indie territory.  I'm So Excited! often shows its budget and revels in the theatrics a little more than it needs to.  But even considering that and its overly simplistic story, it is hard to deny the fluid pace that Almodóvar has been able to create here or his ability to bring charm and charisma to the screen with ease.

There are a few moments of far-fetching dramatics, and the film never hesitates to venture to the brink of inappropriateness.  But the end result is unique, simple, and entertaining.  It isn't anything unusual or a must-see, but for those who opt to see it, you will likely find yourself pleasantly surprised with the end result.

About Stephen Davis

Stephen Davis
I owe this hobby/career to the one and only Stephanie Peterman who, while interning at Fox, told me that I had too many opinions and irrelevant information to keep it all bottled up inside. I survived my first rated R film, Alive, at the ripe age of 8, it took me months to grasp the fact that Julia Roberts actually died at the end of Steel Magnolias, and I might be the only person alive who actually enjoyed Sorority Row…for its comedic value of course. While my friends can drink you under the table, I can outwatch you when it comes iconic, yet horrid 80s films like Adventures in Babysitting and Troop Beverly Hills. I have no shame when it comes to what I like, and if you have a problem with that, then we’ll settle it on the racquetball court. I see too many movies to actually win any film trivia contest, so don’t waste your first pick on me. My friends rent movies from my bookcase shelves, and one day I do plan to start charging. I long to live in LA, where my movie obsession will actually help me fit in, but for now I am content with my home in Austin. I prefer indies to blockbusters, Longhorns to Sooners and Halloween to Friday the 13th. I miss the classics, as well as John Ritter, and I hope to one day sit down and interview the amazing Kate Winslet.
