Running Time:91.00

I will not lie, I had little interest in 2005 when the original Hoodwinked hit theaters starring the voices of Anne Hathaway and Glenn Close. I still saw the film, and surprisingly found it to be both witty and entertaining.  Six years later the long-rumored sequel is set to entertain audiences once again, but this time with Hayden Panettiere taking the helm as Red.  Sadly, Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil does little to entertain as it tries too hard in its pursuit to be "everything to everyone" who was willing to pay the hefty 3D surcharge on their admission ticket.

The original story, which was fun, unique and hilarious, falls flat from the very onset, as it attempts to incorporate as many fairy tale references as possible in the film. Because of the films overindulgent use of fairy tale lore, it is unable to centralize its own story.  As a result, the hodgepodge of one-liners and character references seems out of place as Granny and Red attempt to rescue Hansel and Gretel from the Evil Witch.

Due to the lack of focus we get a story that leaves a lot to be desired.  Mixed within the kidnappings is a plan to obtain the hidden ingredient that would complete the recipe for the super truffle that gives you a power that cannot be overcome.  A bit cliche to say the least, especially when you see how our forest friends fight back against the film's ultimate villain.

I won't say that this film was mostly unwarranted.  A great story was left in the balance at the end of the original that was ultimately used, but not to the extent that it should have been.  At times I felt like I was watching an action video game rather than a movie and most of the things I loved about the original were nowhere to be found in this follow-up.  I will agree that I am not the film's target audience, however, due to the lack of promotion, I'd say that I was just as excited to see the film as anyone else.  In the end, save your money and see something else.  This is one worth waiting to rent.

About Stephen Davis

Stephen Davis
I owe this hobby/career to the one and only Stephanie Peterman who, while interning at Fox, told me that I had too many opinions and irrelevant information to keep it all bottled up inside. I survived my first rated R film, Alive, at the ripe age of 8, it took me months to grasp the fact that Julia Roberts actually died at the end of Steel Magnolias, and I might be the only person alive who actually enjoyed Sorority Row…for its comedic value of course. While my friends can drink you under the table, I can outwatch you when it comes iconic, yet horrid 80s films like Adventures in Babysitting and Troop Beverly Hills. I have no shame when it comes to what I like, and if you have a problem with that, then we’ll settle it on the racquetball court. I see too many movies to actually win any film trivia contest, so don’t waste your first pick on me. My friends rent movies from my bookcase shelves, and one day I do plan to start charging. I long to live in LA, where my movie obsession will actually help me fit in, but for now I am content with my home in Austin. I prefer indies to blockbusters, Longhorns to Sooners and Halloween to Friday the 13th. I miss the classics, as well as John Ritter, and I hope to one day sit down and interview the amazing Kate Winslet.
