Oscar winner Steven Soderbergh wrote the film's lead, Mallory Kane, for famed MMA fighter Gina Carano. With no acting experience, Carano was a big risk. Fortunately for all involved, she pulled it all together to create a unique action-hero worth cheering for.
Boasting an impressive cast that includes the likes of Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, and Michael Douglas, Haywire has a lot going for it from the very onset. But the story isn't exactly revolutionary, leaving most of the credit to newcomer Carano and her impressive MMA fighting techniques.
I will credit Soderbergh for his shot selection and ability to grab an eye appealing scenery, but the film is all about the explosive action and quick moving story. The details are a bit dull and the espionage has been done countess times before, but there is something about having a female heroine that makes everything seem a bit different.
A quick look at Carano's training and a feature focusing on the rest of the cast (the men) gives the DVD disc minimal added value. And since the film is nowhere near Soderbergh's greatest work, it could have benefited from something a little extra, but at the end of the day, the film is still action-packed enough to entertain.
