Nine years ago, Matthew Lillard opted to purchase the film rights to the K.L. Going best-selling novel Fat Kid Rules the World. Back then, he admits he would have played one of the key characters. Now, thanks to his professional growth, he takes his place behind the camera, allowing the film to serve as his directorial debut.
Fat Kid Rules the World is far from a perfect film. That being said, it is still a unique and exciting adventure that follows a down-on-his-luck high school student whose life is saved from a suicide attempt. Music becomes the saving vice, as the beat allows our leading men to grow and accept the life that they have chosen for themselves.
A fresh blend of comedy and drama help distract viewers during the prolonged segments that would otherwise heavily weigh down the story. Granted they are few and far between, but it should be noted that they are there nonetheless. Strong performances from both Jacob Wysocki and Matt O'Leary give everyone a character to root for"”even though O'Leary's Marcus does begin to wear on your patience towards the conclusion.
For a directorial debut, I was mightily impressed with Lillard's sense of style and tone. The story comes together quite nicely, and the film rarely appears to suffer from its 'indie' budget, though I will say that the overbearing call for sympathy for our lead character frustrated me as I continued to pity him as he made remarkable strides of improvement. The film isn't anything amazing but is definitely worthy of your time.
