Review: Due Date

Score:B+

Director:Todd Philips

Cast:Robert Downey Jr., Zach Galifianakis, Jamie Foxx, Michelle Monaghan

Running Time:100.00

Rated:R

While tabbed as the next Hangover, Todd Philips' Due Date is anything but a classic work of comedic genius.  Filled with slapstick humor and witty dialogue, the film occasionally finds itself at the mercy of the one thing it can never escape - itself.  Yet somehow I still left the theater smiling, knowing that the last hour-and-a-half had been spent witnessing a joyous cross-country adventure; one that I could only hope to experience for myself one day.

In a nutshell Zach Galifianakis makes this movie.  Sure Robert Downey Jr. adds his personality, generating occasional chuckles in the process; but, for all intents and purposes, this movie is all Zack.  Full of comedic undertones and youthful innocence, the recent breakout comedic gem rises to the occasion and delivers arguably one of the best performances of his young career.  (Note that I did say arguably.)

Jamie Foxx and Michelle Monaghan are hardly in the film at all, and for once that is a good thing.  Downey Jr. and Galifianakis share a rare bond for two highly prolific actors, working brilliantly together as they prove that in some weird instances, opposites simply don't attract.

I have rarely laughed as hard as I did in this film.  I'm not saying it is great, or that it is anything near what The Hangover achieved just over a year ago; however, it is definitely worth checking out and would make for the perfect group night flick as it is sure to entertain members of both sexes.

About Stephen Davis

Stephen Davis
I owe this hobby/career to the one and only Stephanie Peterman who, while interning at Fox, told me that I had too many opinions and irrelevant information to keep it all bottled up inside. I survived my first rated R film, Alive, at the ripe age of 8, it took me months to grasp the fact that Julia Roberts actually died at the end of Steel Magnolias, and I might be the only person alive who actually enjoyed Sorority Row…for its comedic value of course. While my friends can drink you under the table, I can outwatch you when it comes iconic, yet horrid 80s films like Adventures in Babysitting and Troop Beverly Hills. I have no shame when it comes to what I like, and if you have a problem with that, then we’ll settle it on the racquetball court. I see too many movies to actually win any film trivia contest, so don’t waste your first pick on me. My friends rent movies from my bookcase shelves, and one day I do plan to start charging. I long to live in LA, where my movie obsession will actually help me fit in, but for now I am content with my home in Austin. I prefer indies to blockbusters, Longhorns to Sooners and Halloween to Friday the 13th. I miss the classics, as well as John Ritter, and I hope to one day sit down and interview the amazing Kate Winslet.
