Review: Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky

Score:B

Director:Jan Kounen

Cast:Anna Mouglalis, Mads Mikkelsen, Elena Morozova

Running Time:119 Minutes

Rated:R

The subject matter of Coco
Chanel and Igor Stravinsky is interesting in itself. Take one unique
composer, match him with a legendary fashion designer, and you get a love
affair of creative proportions.

When
Chanel first hears Stravinsky's music in 1913, she is immediately impressed.
Seven years later the two meet again, but this time Igor and his family are
penniless Russian refugees. Coco offers to give him and his family a place to
stay so that he may continue writing music; soon after, a relationship
develops.

Anna
Mouglalis and Mads Mikkelsen are romantically steamy together. And while there
is little dialogue, the actions and expressions of the actors are perfectly
suitable for the film. The costume and set design are quite classically
rendered; I was pulled into the time period.

There
are three DVD special features: The Making of Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky,
the theatrical trailer and previews. These extras are good enough and are
valuable.

Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky turned
out to be quite an intriguing film. Knowing very little about the two subjects,
I still found myself mesmerized by their passion for one another. Afterwards, I
only wanted to know more about both characters.

Rent
the film because you'll learn something and for the simple fact that the film
works. Buy it for sure if you have any interest in the time period or Chanel
and Stravinksky. I am certainly the better for having seen this film.
