Review: African Cats

Score:C

Director:Alastair Fothergill, Keith Scholey

Running Time:89 Minutes

Rated:G

Over the years I have seen numerous Animal Plant and
Discovery Channel documentaries on African cats.  That being said, I was excited for Disney's much hyped
release on the same subject but walked away a bit disappointed.

African Cats follows two different
lion prides and a cheetah and her cubs over an undefined period of time.  Telling "their story" the film
travels alongside some of nature's most magnificent creates, capturing close up
shots that only personified the beautiful cinematography that accompanied each
scene.  At such points you can
actually hear the animals breathing, making you feel as if you are really
sitting next to them in their natural habitat, a surreal feeling in and of
itself.

While the action is fast-paced and the narration suffices
for a film such as this, I still walked away a bit underwhelmed.  As an adult I didn't learn anything new
from the film, making its visual appeal the only memorable attribute to
me.  However, for parents looking
for an educational-type film for their children, this one might work "“ unless they've
already witnessed all the information on the small screen"¦for free.

It should be noted that the film bears a G rating.  There is never any mention of death and
rarely any signs of blood.  While I
feel this takes away from the "their story" concept, it is what it is.  Overall I was intrigued but not
tremendously entertained.
