Set Phasers to Fun: Fourth Star Trek Film Will Reunite Pine and Hemsworth

If you’re still with me after that punny headline, here’s your reward: a Star Trek film starring both Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth.

With praise pouring in for the threequel Star Trek Beyond, Paramount, Skydance and Bad Robot pile on the good news with the official announcement that the Enterprise crew will indeed be back for another adventure. No plot details or potential release dates are known as of yet, but Hemsworth’s welcome return to the galaxy will give writers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay plenty to work with.

The Thor star plays Captain Kirk’s father George, and even though he perished in the opening scenes of the franchise’s first film, time travel opens up all sorts of possibilities in the Trek universe. George’s legacy as a hero has influenced the rebellious Kirk his entire life, so it will be fascinating to see what happens when the two reunite.

But that wasn’t the only bit of Star Trek casting news of the week: J.J. Abrams has gone on the record to say that recently deceased Chekov actor Anton Yelchin will not be replaced as the young Russian navigator. Abrams spoke for all of us mourning the loss when he called the talented Yelchin “irreplaceable.”

Star Trek Beyond opens in theaters this Friday, July 22. Stay tuned for more details on the franchise’s fourth installment.
