Row K Acquires Maude Apatow’s “Poetic License”

Row K Entertainment continues to make a splash, securing North American distribution rights to Poetic License, Maude Apatow’s directorial feature debut, for a reported mid-seven-figure sum.

The film stars Leslie Mann, Cooper Hoffman, Andrew Barth Feldman, Nico Parker, Martha Kelly, Maisy Stella, Will Price, and Cliff “Method Man” Smith.  It had its world premiere at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival last month.

Poetic License marks the fourth studio release for the newly formed Row K.  The film joins Gus Van Sant’s Dead Man’s Wire starring Bill Skarsgärd, the Nick Robinson and Emilia Jones starrer Charlie Harper, and Cliffhanger, a reimagining of the 1983 classic starring Pierce Brosnan and Lily James.

Written by Raffi Donatich, Poetic License follows Liz (Leslie Mann), a former therapist who, on the verge of becoming an empty nester, relocates with her family to a new town in support of her husband’s new job.  A stranger in entirely new surroundings, she works to settle in.  But that attempt is upended when she becomes the point of tension between two best friends, Sam (Cooper Hoffman) and Ari (Andrew Barth Feldman).

Poetic License quickly emerged as one of the standout titles at TIFF, with its sharp filmmaking, smart script, and the undeniable chemistry of its lead cast, captivating audiences and earning rave reviews from critics,” said MCT Principals and Row K Co-Chairman Christopher Woodrow and Raj Singh. “This acquisition continues to establish Row K’s presence in the marketplace, and we’re excited to bring the film to the big screen.”

“Maude Apatow has announced herself as a filmmaker with a truly distinctive voice, and the energy in that Toronto screening confirmed how much audiences are ready for films like this,” added Megan Colligan, President of Row K. “It’s a perfect fit for Row K.”

Though the report confirms a theatrical release forthcoming, no release date has been announced.

About Stephen Davis

I owe this hobby/career to the one and only Stephanie Peterman who, while interning at Fox, told me that I had too many opinions and irrelevant information to keep it all bottled up inside. I survived my first rated R film, Alive, at the ripe age of 8, it took me months to grasp the fact that Julia Roberts actually died at the end of Steel Magnolias, and I might be the only person alive who actually enjoyed Sorority Row…for its comedic value of course. While my friends can drink you under the table, I can outwatch you when it comes iconic, yet horrid 80s films like Adventures in Babysitting and Troop Beverly Hills. I have no shame when it comes to what I like, and if you have a problem with that, then we’ll settle it on the racquetball court. I see too many movies to actually win any film trivia contest, so don’t waste your first pick on me. My friends rent movies from my bookcase shelves, and one day I do plan to start charging. I long to live in LA, where my movie obsession will actually help me fit in, but for now I am content with my home in Austin. I prefer indies to blockbusters, Longhorns to Sooners and Halloween to Friday the 13th. I miss the classics, as well as John Ritter, and I hope to one day sit down and interview the amazing Kate Winslet.
