Picking Your Battles

I've never hidden my disdain for 3-D films. It's a gimmick
and almost never adds anything to the art of film. Guillermo del Toro, best
known for his Hellboy series, said at
this year's Comic-Con that his new monster flick Pacific Rim would not be converted to 3-D. Statements like these
make me jump for joy.

Unfortunately, Warner Bros has decided to post-convert the
film to 3-D, despite del Toro's objections.

The only thing I hate more than 3-D is when a studio decides
to compromise a director's vision for a film. Not to mention post-conversion
almost always looks terrible. Despite my ranting and raving, people will still
put down money to see it in 3-D"¦.mostly because all the 2-D format showings will
either be in the middle of a Tuesday afternoon, or sold out.

Pacific Rim
follows a group of humans that must defend the earth from an alien invasion
using giant robotic suits. So"¦ it's a movie about a group of humans that defend
the earth from giant alien monsters in their giant robots. Sounds like a
morphin' good time"¦ it sounds just like Power Rangers. The only difference is
this time Rita Repulsa throws down her staff, and it converts the film to 3-D.

Studios are going to do what is best for their bottom dollar
no matter how much we cinephiles dislike it. I need a new term to describe
myself; cinephile gets me too many dirty looks. Besides, converting to 3-D will
also allow this film to be released in China as they only allow US films that
are in 3-D or IMAX.   I get
the reasoning, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

About Stephen Davis

Stephen Davis
I owe this hobby/career to the one and only Stephanie Peterman who, while interning at Fox, told me that I had too many opinions and irrelevant information to keep it all bottled up inside. I survived my first rated R film, Alive, at the ripe age of 8, it took me months to grasp the fact that Julia Roberts actually died at the end of Steel Magnolias, and I might be the only person alive who actually enjoyed Sorority Row…for its comedic value of course. While my friends can drink you under the table, I can outwatch you when it comes iconic, yet horrid 80s films like Adventures in Babysitting and Troop Beverly Hills. I have no shame when it comes to what I like, and if you have a problem with that, then we’ll settle it on the racquetball court. I see too many movies to actually win any film trivia contest, so don’t waste your first pick on me. My friends rent movies from my bookcase shelves, and one day I do plan to start charging. I long to live in LA, where my movie obsession will actually help me fit in, but for now I am content with my home in Austin. I prefer indies to blockbusters, Longhorns to Sooners and Halloween to Friday the 13th. I miss the classics, as well as John Ritter, and I hope to one day sit down and interview the amazing Kate Winslet.
