Jolie Wins Language Battle on Film Debut

Angelina Jolie is set to make her directorial debut next month with In the Land of Blood and Honey.  The film is being distributed by FilmDistrict and will hit limited theaters on December 23rd and expand in January of 2012.

When shooting the film Jolie shot the script in both English and the native Bosnian language.  She compiled both versions of the film and showed them to studio's Peter Schlessel and Bob Berney, both of whom decided that the authentic version was best suited for American audiences.

Obviously Jolie prefers this, releasing a statement earlier today. "I'm honored that FilmDistrict has chosen to release the film in the United States in the original BHS language version," she said.  "It was always my hope that U.S. audiences would have the opportunity to experience this version."

The film is set to the backdrop of the Bosnian War during the 1990s as Danijel (Goran Kostic) and Ajla (Zana Marjanovic), Bosnians from opposite sides of the ethnic battle find their relationship drastically change as a result to the war.  The language in the film was referred to as Serbian-Croatian during the war that is being depicted, but is now referred to as the Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (Bosanski/Hrvatski/Srpski).

While there is no definite use for the English spoken version of the film it is expected that it will be played in some international territories and be available on the VOD and DVD versions of the film.

About Stephen Davis

Stephen Davis
I owe this hobby/career to the one and only Stephanie Peterman who, while interning at Fox, told me that I had too many opinions and irrelevant information to keep it all bottled up inside. I survived my first rated R film, Alive, at the ripe age of 8, it took me months to grasp the fact that Julia Roberts actually died at the end of Steel Magnolias, and I might be the only person alive who actually enjoyed Sorority Row…for its comedic value of course. While my friends can drink you under the table, I can outwatch you when it comes iconic, yet horrid 80s films like Adventures in Babysitting and Troop Beverly Hills. I have no shame when it comes to what I like, and if you have a problem with that, then we’ll settle it on the racquetball court. I see too many movies to actually win any film trivia contest, so don’t waste your first pick on me. My friends rent movies from my bookcase shelves, and one day I do plan to start charging. I long to live in LA, where my movie obsession will actually help me fit in, but for now I am content with my home in Austin. I prefer indies to blockbusters, Longhorns to Sooners and Halloween to Friday the 13th. I miss the classics, as well as John Ritter, and I hope to one day sit down and interview the amazing Kate Winslet.
