Oliver Stone has never been one to shy away from controversy, so making a film about one of the most controversial figures in recent memory only seems natural. In his latest feature, the Oscar-winning filmmaker tells the story of Edward Snowden, the NSA employee-turned-whistleblower who now lives in Russia and tweets hilarious things at Jeb Bush.
As the titular character, Joseph Gordon-Levitt embodies the look and sound of Snowden, and he’s joined on screen by a stellar cast that includes Shailene Woodley, Nicolas Cage, Zachary Quinto and Tom Wilkinson. The new trailer sets up a Snowden v. NSA showdown that we all know from the news, but have yet so see much of beyond the stellar documentary Citizenfour.
Set to an eerie, stripped-down cover of “The Saints Go Marching In,” it skillfully teases a behind-the-scenes story that will be the subject of much debate—and perhaps some Oscar buzz, as well?
Watch the trailer below, and see the film in theaters on September 16, 2016.
