“Downton Abbey” Set to End After Season Six

Carnival Films and ITV announced on Thursday that the sixth season would also be Downton Abbey's final season. The worldwide hit television drama is the most nominated British show in Emmy history with 51 nominations to date.  It has taken home 11 wins.

Julian Fellowes, writer, creator, and Executive Producer said, "The Downton journey has been amazing for everyone aboard"¦Exactly why the series had such an impact and reached so many people around the world, all nationalities, all ages, all types, I cannot begin to explain. But I do know how grateful we are to have been allowed this unique experience."

The announcement comes after Maggie Smith, who plays fan favorite the Dowager Countess of Grantham, confirmed earlier this month that she would be leaving the series after the sixth season whether the show continued or not.

Downton Abbey has already begun filming on its sixth and final season in the UK. It will air on PBS in January 2016.
