Disney Makes Bold ‘Blu’ Statement

Having sealed away several of their all-time classics in the air-tight 'vault,' Walt Disney Studios has kept fans waiting anxiously for some of their Blu-Rays.

Well guys, as of this past Tuesday, your collections become a bit more complete as  five new releases finally hit store shelves:  The Aristocats, The Tigger Movie, The Rescuers/The Rescuers Down Under combo pack, Lady and the Tramp II, and Pocahontas/Pocahontas II combo pack.

But before you head out to the store, check out what I have to say on each of the titles, as only a few are worth your hard earned dollars!

The Aristocats: Special Edition:  Reliving one of Disney's most recognized classics, audiences are able to revisit Paris with Thomas O'Malley and the gang as they swoop in to save the day.  A pure blend of comedy, adventure, and drama, The Aristocats is a timeless classic that is enhanced through its HD transformation.  Grade: B+

The Tigger Movie: Bouce-A-Rrrific Special Edition:  Ever since I was a kid, I've loved Winnie the Pooh and all his quirky adventures.  The Tigger Movie took me back in time as Tigger sets out on a quest to find others who are like him.  The film shines a bright light on the meaning of family, friends, and the power and importance of both.  The contest is more geared towards the younger crowd, and therefore I find it a bit difficult to recommend a purchase.  It's good, just not really for my demographic (not anymore, at least).  Grade: C

Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure - Special Edition:  While I adored the 1955 original, this 2001 sequel is anything but worthy of sharing its title.  Taking us on a wild adventure with Scamp, the adorable offspring of our beloved leads, Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure is a far cry from the classic we all fell in love with years ago.  Maybe the younger generation will adore the pups, but even an HD conversion can't win me over on this greedy excuse of a sequel.  Grade: D-

The Rescuers/The Rescuers Down Under: 35th Anniversary Edition:  Unlike Lady and the Tramp, The Rescuers got a worthy sequel that, to many, lives up to the excitement and entertainment of the original.  I personally don't favor either film over the other, which makes this ultimate two-pack a must-have for my personal collection.  If anything, this combo pack makes me wonder why the adventures of Bernard and Bianca, the world's bravest little mice, stopped at two.  Either way, a solid purchase for any long time Disney fan.  Grade:  A-

Pocahontas/Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World - Special Edition:  While the original is a timeless classic that belongs in everyone's home collection on social relevance alone, the sequel is an absolute wash that I was embarrassed to even put into my disc player.  That being said, this combo pack is the only way that you can bring home an HD version of the historical masterpiece, and with colors and music such as it possesses, you're gonna have to bite the bullet.  Grade:  B-

About Stephen Davis

Stephen Davis
I owe this hobby/career to the one and only Stephanie Peterman who, while interning at Fox, told me that I had too many opinions and irrelevant information to keep it all bottled up inside. I survived my first rated R film, Alive, at the ripe age of 8, it took me months to grasp the fact that Julia Roberts actually died at the end of Steel Magnolias, and I might be the only person alive who actually enjoyed Sorority Row…for its comedic value of course. While my friends can drink you under the table, I can outwatch you when it comes iconic, yet horrid 80s films like Adventures in Babysitting and Troop Beverly Hills. I have no shame when it comes to what I like, and if you have a problem with that, then we’ll settle it on the racquetball court. I see too many movies to actually win any film trivia contest, so don’t waste your first pick on me. My friends rent movies from my bookcase shelves, and one day I do plan to start charging. I long to live in LA, where my movie obsession will actually help me fit in, but for now I am content with my home in Austin. I prefer indies to blockbusters, Longhorns to Sooners and Halloween to Friday the 13th. I miss the classics, as well as John Ritter, and I hope to one day sit down and interview the amazing Kate Winslet.
