Demi Lovato and Rainn Wilson Headline “Get Smurfy” Voice Cast

Platinum-selling recording artist Demi Lovato is joining Emmy-nominee Rainn Wilson and Emmy winner Mandy Patinkin in Sony Pictures Animation's reboot Get Smurfy.  The castings were announced early Sunday in conjunction with Global Smurfs Day.

The film, which is set to hit theaters worldwide on March 31, 2017, will return the franchise to its roots, recapturing the artistic style of Peyo, who created the unique blue creatures back in 1958.

Lovato is set to voice Smurfette and Patinkin will play Papa Smurf.  Wilson will star as the Smurfs arch-nemises, the evil wizard Gargamel.

The film will follow Smurfette and her fellow blue creatures as they search Enchanged Forest for the Smurf's village.  The film is set to answer several origin questions regarding the Smurfs, including why their is only one female amongst them.

The film marks the third film in the Columbia Pictures franchise.  The first two were a blend of live action and animation.  Relased in 2011 and 2013, they have combined for over $900 million globally.

"We felt it was important to take a very different approach with this origin story.  It returns to the roots of Peyo's creation in this CG animated adventure," producer Jordan Kerner said in a statement.  "I hope it will delight not only fans but audiences worldwide.  We couldn't be more excited with the talented new cast we're starting to assemble for our Smurfy reboot!"

While more cast members will lkely be announced over the coming months, Sony Pictures Annimation will work to turn audiences' attention towards Hotel Transylvania 2.  The star-studded comedy sequel hits theaters in September.

About Stephen Davis

Stephen Davis
I owe this hobby/career to the one and only Stephanie Peterman who, while interning at Fox, told me that I had too many opinions and irrelevant information to keep it all bottled up inside. I survived my first rated R film, Alive, at the ripe age of 8, it took me months to grasp the fact that Julia Roberts actually died at the end of Steel Magnolias, and I might be the only person alive who actually enjoyed Sorority Row…for its comedic value of course. While my friends can drink you under the table, I can outwatch you when it comes iconic, yet horrid 80s films like Adventures in Babysitting and Troop Beverly Hills. I have no shame when it comes to what I like, and if you have a problem with that, then we’ll settle it on the racquetball court. I see too many movies to actually win any film trivia contest, so don’t waste your first pick on me. My friends rent movies from my bookcase shelves, and one day I do plan to start charging. I long to live in LA, where my movie obsession will actually help me fit in, but for now I am content with my home in Austin. I prefer indies to blockbusters, Longhorns to Sooners and Halloween to Friday the 13th. I miss the classics, as well as John Ritter, and I hope to one day sit down and interview the amazing Kate Winslet.
