Robert Eggers is getting his spooky band back together for his latest ancient horror flick. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, Ralph Ineson, and of course Willem Dafoe all return from 2024's Nosferatu for another tale of a European village tormented by supernatural evil.
In Werwulf – an original script written by Eggers and Sjón – a man (Taylor-Johnson) with his own demons is enlisted to help hunt a beast ravaging the countryside. But as the death toll grows, so do suspicions that the culprit may not be a typical predator.
The film's unusual look is courtesy of Eggers' usual cinematographer Jarin Blaschke. Once again shooting in a 1.37:1 ratio, the 35mm film stock was developed using a special orthochromatic process, resulting in a unique color palette and heavy grain structure. I'm sure audiences will be level-headed in their debate over which is the proper format to see it in.
For fans who want to go even further into the darkness, there's an alternate reality game available at DevourethAllMankynde.com. Players can get clues every full moon on the film's social media pages, and attempt to decipher them all, with a "mysterious prize" available to those who get them all.
Werwulf takes a bite out of the holiday competition on Christmas Day.
