Catherine O’Hara Joins HBO’s “The Last of Us”

Catherine O’Hara is joining the world of “The Last of Us.”

The Emmy-winning Schitt’s Creek star has been cast in an undisclosed guest role for the HBO drama series’ highly anticipated second season. She joins previously announced cast additions Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Young Marion as Jesse, and Isabela Merced as Dina. Leads Padro Pascal and Bella Ramsey will return for the new season as Joel and Ellie, respectively.

Based on the Naughty Dog video game, the first season of the award-winning show begins in Austin, Texas, twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardworking survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a young girl, out of a quarantine zone. Though the job begins small, it quickly balloons into a cross-country joinery where they both must lean on one another for survival.

Set to begin filming later this month, season two will focus on the events of “The Last of Us: Part II.” That game, also by Naughty Dog, takes place five years after the conclusion of the first, showing the duo settled in Jackson, Wyoming.

The show has become somewhat of a showcase for guest stars. Season one featured a plethora of highly respected actors, including Nick Offerman, Melanie Lynsey, Storm Reid, and original video game performer Ashley Johnson. Five guest stars garnered 2024 Emmy nominations for their work. O’Hara is the first such actor announced for season two.

O’Hara is an eight-time Emmy nominee who last took home the trophy in 2020 for her work as Moira Rose in Schitt’s Creek. She won the 2021 Golden Globe for the same role. On the big screen, she is most recognized for her work on Home AloneBeetlejuice, and as a member of Christopher Guest’s recurring ensemble.

The Last of Us is set to premiere in 2025.

About Stephen Davis

Stephen Davis
I owe this hobby/career to the one and only Stephanie Peterman who, while interning at Fox, told me that I had too many opinions and irrelevant information to keep it all bottled up inside. I survived my first rated R film, Alive, at the ripe age of 8, it took me months to grasp the fact that Julia Roberts actually died at the end of Steel Magnolias, and I might be the only person alive who actually enjoyed Sorority Row…for its comedic value of course. While my friends can drink you under the table, I can outwatch you when it comes iconic, yet horrid 80s films like Adventures in Babysitting and Troop Beverly Hills. I have no shame when it comes to what I like, and if you have a problem with that, then we’ll settle it on the racquetball court. I see too many movies to actually win any film trivia contest, so don’t waste your first pick on me. My friends rent movies from my bookcase shelves, and one day I do plan to start charging. I long to live in LA, where my movie obsession will actually help me fit in, but for now I am content with my home in Austin. I prefer indies to blockbusters, Longhorns to Sooners and Halloween to Friday the 13th. I miss the classics, as well as John Ritter, and I hope to one day sit down and interview the amazing Kate Winslet.
