Few capture the essence and energy of a historical epic like Ridley Scott. The Gladiator director has always had a knack for the craft, and it appears he is on top of his game with The Last Duel, the star-studded true-story telling centered on ruthless betrayal and mighty vengeance.
Set amidst the harsh brutality of 14th century France during the Hundred Years War, the film focuses on one woman, surrounded by “brave” men, who opts to speak her truth, laying bare for the town to see as she counters an admired noble with the events of an unshakable night.
The film’s first trailer celebrates the period, showing off a large production of impressive set pieces. A haunting voiceover quickly sets the stage as we listen to a strong, confident Jodie Comer solidify her stance and unapologetically state her fact.
It’s an interesting montage of scenes, painting a rather vivid picture of the film to come. While it reveals quite a bit, it still has me excited for more. Maybe it’s the fact that massive productions have been gone from the theater for over a year, or that this marks the reteaming of Academy Award-winning screenwriters Matt Damon and Ben Affleck (with Nicole Holofcener). Either way, the film has my attention.
Starring Matt Damon, Jodie Comer, Adam Driver, and Ben Affleck, The Last Duel is set to fight its way into theaters on October 15.
