Netflix’s “The Two Popes” Gets Intense, Dramatic Trailer

Netflix has just released a trailer for its powerful, intense, star-studded The Two Popes.

The film, based on actual events, tells the story of the dramatic transformation of power that included the retirement of Pope Benedict (Anthony Hopkins) and the ascension of Cardinal Bergoglio (Jonathan Pryce) to the papacy.

The trailer, in all its intensity, appears to make a concerted effort to humanize the two public figures, shining a light on the insecurities that rest within their soul. It’s an interesting take, making me wonder how director Fernando Meirelles and writer Anthony McCarten are going to navigate the wide-ranging scandal that has consumed Catholic priests over the last several years.

Whether The Two Popes proves to be a film solely meant for Catholics or not, we’ll all find out together when it hits select theaters on November 27 and Netflix on December 20.

I prefer indies to blockbusters, Longhorns to Sooners and Halloween to Friday the 13th. I miss the classics, as well as John Ritter, and I hope to one day sit down and interview the amazing Kate Winslet.
