It has been twenty-eight years since Barry Sonnenfeld’s classic The Addams Family first invaded theaters. That film, which earned itself a sequel and boasted an incredible cast of amazing talent, was the seventh highest-grossing film that year and found itself nominated for two Academy Awards.
Though lightning rarely strikes twice, MGM has returned to the legendary IP for an animated reboot. The film showcases the famous Addams family as they migrate to the burbs in the heart of New Jersey, leaning heavy on the social commentary as the film looks to shed its dark image and play more for laughs when compared to the 1991 original.
The film’s first full-length trailer centers on a run of awkward normalities, pop-cultural references, witty one-liners, and everything else that is unusual about the creepy, kookie family. It is these differences that have them at odds with their new neighbors.
In what appears to be a timely story of accepting one’s differences and embracing change, the new The Addams Family carries a different tone than the original, and that’s okay. Who could ever compete with the jaw-dropping performances of Angelica Houston and Christina Ricci?
The film boasts an impressive voice cast including the likes of Charlize Theron, Oscar Isaac, Catherine O’Hara, Allison Janney, Chloë Grace Moretz, Nick Kroll, Martin Short, Bette Midler, and Snoop Dogg. Directed by Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon, The Addams Family hits theaters on October 11, just in time for Halloween.
