The often underutilized, and heavily under appreciated Paul Dano can now add director to his resume, thanks to his debut film Wildlife.
The Sundance and Cannes entry has just gotten its first trailer. Though it reveals very little in regard to the film’s central plot, opting to focus more on the critical accolades for Dano and stars Carey Mulligan and Jack Gyllenhaal, we do get a strong grasp of the film’s overall style and aesthetic.
Rich in presentation and bearing a basic, almost mundane color scheme, the period piece offers up a unique point of view, that of Joe, the couple’s lone son. Intermixed with a truly complex mother and somewhat absent father, Joe’s witness to the dissolution of his parents’ marriage offers up a tremendous character study that, based on the trailer, makes a lasting impact on those who watch it.
Co-staring newcomer Ed Oxenbould and Bill Camp, Wildlife opens in limited release on October 19.
