Videogame adaptation Rampage marks the first of three Dwayne Johnson films set to hit theaters in 2018. Based on the popular 1980s game that saw monsters terrorize cities as they climbed and destroyed buildings, the action adventure film re-teams Johnson with his San Andreas director Brad Peyton - and by way of the film’s first trailer, things don’t look all that impressive.
Johnson stars as Davis Okoye, a primatologist who shares a remarkably close bond with George, an intelligent silverback gorilla. But when a rogue genetic experiment transforms Davis’ best friend into an oversized monster, a global crisis is created. Searching frantically for an antidote, everyone soon realizes that George isn’t the only animal to be altered.
The trailer bears a startling resembles to 2015’s San Andreas (minus the animals of course). Though it is tough to deny Johnson’s track record in regard to ‘save the world’ style disaster films, much is to be desired with this one. One can only hope that the full film carries a little more creativity and doesn’t turn out to be an overly done CGI nightmare, an unfortunate pitfall that has gotten the best of many such films as of late.
Rampage also stars Naomie Harris, Maline Akerman, Joe Manganiello, Jake Lacy and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. It is set for an April 20, 2018 release.
