Festival favorite Gook has a new trailer, full of heart and drama. The film stars director/screenwriter/lead Justin Chon as Eli, a Korean American living in 1990s Los Angeles running his late father’s shoe store with his brother Daniel (David So) in a predominantly African American neighborhood. The brothers strike up a friendship with an 11-year-old African American girl named Kamilla (Simone Baker), a friendship that is put to the test when riots begin to break out in LA after the Rodney King verdict.
Shot in black and white, the film looks to examine the relationship between Asian and African Americans during a time when racial tensions were boiling over into the streets. Dealing with themes of family, brotherhood, and achieving their dreams, Gook is a film with unique perspective and deeply personal to its star/director/screenwriter.
The film, which was an audience award winner at Sundance, comes to select theaters on Friday, August 25, 2017. Check out the trailer below.
