Next year, the X-Men universe is getting a shock to its system with Josh Boone’s The New Mutants, the newest adventure centered within the same Fox universe as X-Men and Deadpool.
Based on the trailer the film appears to take place in a psychiatric ward, and things looks genuinely scary. Boone wanted to inject a healthy dose of horror into the comic book movie genre and based on this first look, he delivers! The film is also the beginning of a horror trilogy, which should have fans jumping for joy.
The New Mutants is based on the groundbreaking The Demon Bear storyline by Bill Sieniewicz and Chris Claremont. In it, the Demon Bear was an entity that haunted new mutant Danielle Moonstar and eventually, the rest of her team. The film will follow five mutants learning about their abilities while fighting against their past.
The casting for the five mutants is spot on. Split’s Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams as werewolf Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Stranger Things Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage and Henry Zaga as Roberto de Costa/Sunspot.
Though we know that they are mutants, Fox did a fantastic job of not showing any mutant abilities within the trailer. So while we will get explosions, be prepared for more thrills and screams than superhero landings.
The New Mutants is scheduled for an April 13, 2018 (Friday the 13th to be exact).
