In a not so surprising turn of events, Illumination is returning to the Despicable Me franchise, this time for a Minions sequel (and therefore, a Despicable Me prequel). This time around, we watch on as our loveable yellow friends and a young Gru inhabit the 70s as they desperately try to find their evil groove.
Steve Carell returns to voice the lovable Gru while Russell Brand embodies a young Dr. Nefario, an aspiring mad scientist we first met in Despicable Me 2. Minions: The Rise of Gru will also introduce us to a whole new cast of characters as the Vicious 6, the coolest supervillain group around, enters the franchise by way of Taraji P. Henson, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lucy Lawless, Dolph Lundgren, and Danny Trejo. Michelle Yeoh and Julie Andrews also star.
From the limited information we have, this sequel/prequel appears to fit better within the context of the franchise – at least conceptually. And the film sets itself up for the perfect sequel that will showcase Gru during his college years, because why not?
Minions: The Rise of Gru hits theaters on July 3.
