Two powerhouse actors are poised to take on two legendary roles in Mary Queen of Scots. Saoirse Ronan plays Mary Stuart, queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, avoiding remarriage to stay in power. She returns to her native Scotland to claim the throne, much to the displeasure of the Queen of Scotland and England, Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie).
The just-released character posters place their two leads front and center, in dramatic front profile, with the actors in full period costumes. Meanwhile, the trailer is full of drama. Mary and Elizabeth, cousins, begin as friends but quickly become rivals all while their governments lament, in voiceover, that they’re being controlled by women.
Check out the trailer below, and catch Mary Queen of Scots in theaters on December 7.
