Based on real events, Bitter Harvest tells the story of Yuri (Max Irons) and his childhood sweetheart Natalka (Samantha Barks). Set in 1930s Ukraine, Yuri and Natalka are swept up in the genocidal policies of Joseph Stalin, who instigated a “death-by-starvation” program to bolster Soviet Union power and lay claim to Ukraine’s natural resources.
The trailer is lush and dramatic and hints at the turmoil this young couple will endure. With promises of love, war, intrigue and hardship, Bitter Harvest seems like it could attract a variety of audiences. If nothing else, we can all see how Jeremy Irons’ son stacks up to his father.
Directed by George Mendeluk and based on an original story by Richard Bachynsky-Hoover, Bitter Harvest hits theaters in the U.S. on February 24, 2017.
