Review: The Pretty One

Score:C-

Director:Jenée LaMarque

Cast:Zoe Kazan, Jake Johnson, Ron Livingston

Running Time:90 Minutes

Rated:R

A pretty interesting premise about a pretty woman that pretty much goes as you would expect, The Pretty One examines the world of a shy girl named Laurel and her outgoing twin sister Audrey. When they tragically get into a car accident, Laurel survives, gets memory loss, and accidentally assumes the identity of her dead sister Audrey.

While there's some nice acting in here, its story doesn't propel you to keep your eyes on the screen. Instead, you're checking the clock, wondering how fast the predictable bombshell of everything backfiring on Laurel will come. If you're a New Girl fan and you love you some Jake Johnson, then that may be enough for you to check this film out, but he's basically playing Nick (his character on that TV show).

This comedy-drama works better dramatically but not that effectively because it would rather make you laugh than cry (and it didn't do either for me). While it's refreshing to see two up-and-coming actors that aren't overexposed (yet), in the end, it's all about the grabbing story that makes you want to stay and make all your pretty little problems go away while you watch someone else's pretty little problems for ninety minutes.
