SXSW Review: Insidious

Score:C

Director:James Wan

Cast:Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Barbara Hershey

Running Time:102.00

Rated:PG-13

I'm not going to lie, I really don't like scary movies for one reason and one reason only, I get scared.  Watching Insidious was not my idea because the combination of Saw director James Wan and Paranormal Activity producer Oren Peli really put the fright-film jitters in me.

Insidious is the story of a family trying to prevent evil spirits from entering their son's body after he fails into a coma.  Thinking that their new house is haunted, they move to another, with little luck.  Soon they enlist the help of a spirit counselor and in doing so find out more information than they can handle.

Patrick Wilson does the best job, by far, in the acting department.  Insidious brought together the right people for the film but I feel the movie really lacked creativity. The story plays out like almost all other scary movies and some parts of the film are outright cheesy. That being said, the movie did make me jump more than a few times and made my sleep semi-uncomfortable.

What really impressed me is that it's hard to tell it was made for an estimated $1,000,000. The camera work and quality is that good.

Overall, Insidious is not the best scary movie ever but it's also not the worst. James Wan (best known as the director of the original Saw film) and producer Oren Peli start off with a creepy movie, but then it starts to taper off toward the ending.  This is a cool movie to check out at a film festival but I think I would make for a better Blu-ray/dvd experience.
